킹윌리엄 섬[King William Island]은 캐나다 누나부트 준주[Nunavut Territory]에 속하는 섬으로 면적 13,111㎢이다. 동쪽으로는 제임스 로스 해협[James Ross Strait]과 레이 해협[Rae Strait]에 의해 부시아 반도[Boothia Peninsula]에서 분리되어 있다. 서쪽으로는 빅토리아 해협[Victoria Strait]이 있고 그 너머로 빅토리아 섬[Victoria Island]이 있다. 1903~1905년 탐험가 로알 아문센(Roald Amundsen; 1872~1928)이 항해 중 정박했던 항구가 이 섬의 유일한 정착지인 조 헤이븐(Gjoa Haven)이다. 이누이트(Inuit) 족이 오랫동안 거주했던 이 섬의 원래 이름은 킹윌리엄랜드(King William Land)인데 이 섬을 반도로 착각한 존 로스(John Ross; 1777~1856)가 1830년에 영국 왕 윌리엄 4세[William IV; 1765~1837]의 이름을 따서 섬 이름을 지었다.

 

King William Island (Inuktitut: Qikiqtaq) is an island in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut and forms part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. In area it is between 12,516㎢ and 13,111㎢ making it the 61st largest island in the world and Canada's 15th largest island. Its population, as of the 2006 census, was 1,064, all of which live in the island's only community Gjoa Haven.

The island is separated from the Boothia Peninsula by the James Ross Strait to the northeast, and the Rae Strait to the east. To the west is the Victoria Strait and beyond it Victoria Island. Within the Simpson Strait, to the south of the island, is Todd Island, and beyond it, further to the south, is the Adelaide Peninsula. Queen Maud Gulf lies to the southwest.

Some places on the coast are: (counterclockwise from the northern tip) Cape Felix, Victory Point and Gore Point at the mouth of an inlet, Point Le Vesconte, Erebus Bay, Cape Crozier, (south side) Terror Bay, Irving Islands, Washington Bay, Cape Herschel, Gladman Point, entrance to Simpson Strait, Todd Islets, (east side) Gjoa Haven, Matheson Peninsula, Latrobe Bay, Cape Norton at mouth of Peel Inlet, Matty Island, Tennent Islands, Clarence Islands, Cape Felix.

The island is known for its large populations of caribou who summer there, before walking south over the sea ice in the autumn.
